Most procrastinators feel that Virginia Tech will defeat Boise State in the neutral site game, in what is considered Boise States only “tough” competition on their schedule. Coupled with the fact that the game is in primetime, football fans and sports bettors are going to be spoiled for this rare Monday night contest on ESPN at 8:00pm eastern. Today we like a pair of games, the first on being in Milwaukee, where the Cardinals square off against Yovani Gallardo and the Brewers. Currently the Cardinals backs are to the wall, trailing by 7 full games to the Reds. Today and each day on become increasingly important for St Louis. Sports bettors and baseball fans have seen late season streaks in recent years and the Cardinals need to start one today. My system did come up redbirds in this one, and Jake Westbrook looks for a strong outing this afternoon.

The Cincinnati Reds vs. the St. Louis Cardinals at St. Louis

From Friday to Sunday, St. Louis will have their best three pitchers on the mound for a series that represents the team’s last effort to do some serious damage in the National League’s Central division. Cincinnati comes to Friday 8 games ahead of St. Louis, after gaining four games in four days. Cincinnati is 14-4 in their last 18 games, and St. Louis is coming off a bad 2-8 trip on the road against some of the lousiest clubs in the National League right now – Pittsburgh, Washington and Houston.

Experts at YouWager.com seem to think the Cardinals might even pull a sweep here and try to get back into the race for the Central division with their big three: Jaime Garcia, Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter. Combined, these three guys have a 43-20 record, so they will be favored against the Reds’ best three: Bronson Arroyo, Travis Wood and Homer Bailey.

StatFox expects the Cincinnati Reds to beat the St. Louis Cardinals in Friday night’s game. They say, Play Against Home teams with a money line of -100 to -150 (St. Louis), after they’ve been swept on the road in a 3 game series by a division rival, with a winning percentage of between 45-55% on the season. They are 32-14 since 1997, at 69.6%, or +24.1 units (Rating = 3*).

These statistics offer reasons to pick the Reds for the entire series this weekend. They say, Play On All underdogs with a money line of +100 or higher (Cincinnati) with a winning record on the season, in September games. They are 265-237 for the last 5 seasons, at 52.8%, with +100.2 units (Rating = 3*).

The Colorado Rockies vs. the San Diego Padres at San Diego

Friday through Sunday, the San Diego Padres will have a pitching edge that should put some distance between them and the determined Colorado Rockies. The Padres have lost seven games in a row, but they lead the West division by three games over San Francisco and have 7.5 games over Colorado.

Friday, San Diego will send Cory Luebke to the mound for a major-league debut. In spite of lack of major-league experience here, YouWager.com has posted the line at -149 for this 6-foot-4 lefty. Luebke ended a run in Triple-A in Portland with a 14-inning scoreless streak and racked up a 2.97 ERA, 44 K, and 17 BB in nine starts. This is also shows the faith in Luebke’s foe here, Aaron Cook. Cook is 4-8, with a 5.34 ERA, and he has a 3.98 ERA and 3.00 WHIP in his last three starts.

StatFox points out two good reasons to take the San Diego Padres on Friday.

They say, Play Against -Road teams (Colorado) after a game where the pitching staff was hit for 6 or more earned runs against an opponent with a hot bullpen with an ERA under 3.00 in the last 15 games. They are 70-23 over the last 5 seasons, for 75.3%, at +43.8 units (Rating = 4*).

And they also say, Play Against -Road underdogs with a money line of +100 to +150 (Colorado) with a bad pitching staff that misses 38% or more of their save opportunities, with a ‘cold’ starting pitcher with a WHIP of more than 2.250 in his last 3 starts. They are 37-8 for the last 5 seasons, at 82.2%, or +26.9 units (Rating = 4*).

McMurray is trying to accomplish a big comeback. But no NASCAR driver has ever overcome a 100-point deficit that big with just two races to go. The best comeback any driver has made in recent years would be the Kasey Kahne’s 90 points with two races in 2006 when he beat Tony Stewart’s run.

Kahne won the Labor Day weekend race last year and locked in his spot in the 2009 Chase for the Cup. Kurt Busch won at the track during the last races here in the Spring. This time, Kahne seems to be on the outside. In 16th place, he is now 136 points from the 12th and last spot. Any driver that remains 196 points below 12th place after this race will be officially dropped from the Chase Cup competition. However, any driver that is 62 points below 12th place going into the last race at Richmond will be dropped if a driver in front of him in points simply starts the race.

In the last five Cup races here at Atlanta, The Busch boys, Kurt (375) and Kyle (219), led the most laps. They each have had three victories, and they can also boast four top-five and five top-10 finishes between to the two of them. Other winners here include Carl Edwards (two Fall events and one race in Spring), Tony Stewart, with win in Fall of 2006, and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who won in Spring of 2004. Jimmie Johnson won both the Spring and Fall events in 2007, but he has struggled during his last seven races. Johnson had only one top-10 finish, and that was 10th at Pocono. NASCAR experts at YouWager.com note that Johnson has been qualifying well, though. He started at the front and lead for many laps in several of those events. Even though Johnson had some trouble last year in the points race for the Chase Cup, he still managed to pull off his fourth title.

This is only the second year for the race to be held on Labor Day weekend. Some changes were made at NASCAR, to make the last three events for the Chase Cup happen in a shorter time span. From 2002-08 this race occurred later in October. From 1975 to 2001, the race was in November.

The BC Lions have lost 7 in a row since they beat Edmonton in their season opener. Montreal lost their opening match, but they’ve won six of their last seven games. Montreal has the best passing attack in the CFL right now. They are king 2nd in the Canadian Football League in Points Per Game with 33.6. British Columbia is 2nd-to-last in points so far with an average 21.2 Points Per Game.

In this series, Montreal has won three in a row and four games at home against British Columbia. The Montreal Alouettes are undefeated in four home games this season. On their home ground, they average 36.7 Points Per Game.

Our daily blog picks split yesterday. But like I always say…”a split is a win”, especially if you are betting consistent amounts and only dogs, which is all I will give you. For the season we are 46-38 after a nice win with the Tigers taking a 10-9 11 inning win in Minnesota. Our loser was the Orioles, as a 5 run 2nd inning propelled the Red Sox to a much needed 6-4 win. The Orioles had the tying runs on in the 9th, but couldn’t get the clutch hit, and Papelbon held on. Moving on to today’s action, we start in the Bronx, where the Yankees take on the Blue Jays. The Yanks have been riding high as of late, but blog followers know, I don’t pay attention to all of that. By now, you have probably seen what Nyjer Morgan has been up lately. Sports bettors trust me when I tell you, I never in a million years thought I would mention Morgan on the YouWager.com blog. But, all of the sudden Morgan has decided that plowing into defenseless catchers is the thing to do. Brian Anderson of the Cardinals wasn’t even close to blocking the play or being in the play when Morgan threw his 180 pounds of spaghetti arms into him last week. Then, he does it again this week against Brett Hayes of the Marlins this week, injuring Hayes severely in the process. So when Chris Volstad hit Morgan the next night, which was to be expected,(especially in a 14-3 game in the 4th), Morgan acted like a professional for a minute or two and ran to first base. What happened next is a joke. I love the YouWager.com because it gives a forum to voice my opinions, and boy do I have one on this. I played 4 years of Division 1 baseball in college. Played in several independent leagues since then. Let me tell you this. You never should give up or quit during a game. Period. But the way that Morgan acted upon stealing bases at that point was a joke. There are some unwritten rules and a way to act. So, Volstad throws one behind Morgan next at bat, prompting Morgan to take his girly 180 pound frame and charge Volstad. He looked like the Lucky Charms leprechaun wearing a Nationals uniform. Marlins first baseball gave Morgan a clothesline that was definitely “Magically delicious”. Haha. I will stop. But memo to Morgan…”You are little, so stop acting big”, and maybe, just maybe play the game right, if your suspensions ever end.

According to StatFox, there aren’t many that garner 4* Ratings, but one case centers on the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas has only scored only 48 points in their four preseason matches. They say Play On Home teams (DALLAS) after they’ve gone under the total by 21 or more points total in their last three matches, in non-conference games. The Cowboys are 26-4 since 1993, or 86.7% at +21.6 units (Rating = 4*).

If you following handicapping theories, the simplest of all is to Play On teams that are good, and Play Against teams that are bad, right? Well, check out this one:

Play On Underdogs or, Pick New England, Atlanta, New Orleans (Good Teams) with (60% to 75% ratios) playing bad teams (with 25% to 40%), that are 23-4 since 1993, or roughly 85.2%, for +18.6 units (Ratings = 3*).

Instinct might suggest that a bad team like the Buffalo Bills coming off two straight victories is due for a loss. But this is preseason. This is where the bad clubs can perform well.

Here’s another tip from StaFox: Play On Road Underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points (Buffalo, Green Bay) after 2 or more consecutive straight up victories in the last two weeks of the preseason. They’re 40-14 since 1993, at 74.1% or +24.6 units (Rating = 3*).

Play Against!

Some sports bettors were foolish enough to take the Colts in the last two weeks, and thought they would actually care about winning preseason games. Looking at the Indianapolis Colts and their sorry 4-21 straight up preseason record since 2005, it’s probably best to stay away from them even with their 6.5-point spread as an underdog at home. Play Against Any team (Indianapolis) after 3 or more losses in a row against the spread, with a losing record -they’re 38-16 since 1993 or 70.4% at +20.4 units (Rating = 2*). By this theory, sports bettors should Play Against Kansas City. They’re hosting the “good team,” Green Bay.

Chicago and Seattle are also in this category with 0-3 against the spread. StatFox cautions sports bettors to avoid these teams on the road. Saturday, LSU (number 21) and North Carolina (No. 18) will face each other in Atlanta for a primetime shooting match. Another game that will be featured in primetime is a matchup between Oregon State (24) and TCU (6). The hottest game happens Monday night when Virginia Tech (10) meets Boise State (3) in Washington, DC.

TCU and Boise State were two of the country’s best teams against the spread last year. Both were undefeated all through the regular season until they went head-to-head in the Fiesta Bowl, where Boise won 17-10. The Broncos were 9-5 against the spread, and tied for 9th in FBS. The TCU Horned Frogs were 8-5 against the spread and tied for 17th. Virginia Tech played solidly last season and went 8-5 against the spread.

Last year’s against the spread champs were the Huskies of the University of Connecticut. Randy Edsall’s crew covered the line in 11 of their 13 games and had an 8-5 record straight up. This includes an overtime victory in South Bend. U Conn’s five straight up defeats last year were by only 2, 3, 4, 4 and 2 points. The Huskies are an underdog on Saturday. At the start of the season last year, Michigan was 4-0 straight up and 3-1 against the spread. But they went 1-7 straight up and 1-6 against the spread for the remainder of the season. StatFox says smart bettors are putting their dough on U Conn for this game. They say,

Michigan was not the only top-rated school to struggle against the spread last year. In spite of ending with marks of .500 or higher, USC, at 9-4 straight up and 4-9 against the spread, Florida State, with 7-6 straight up and 4-9 against the spread, and Notre Dame at 6-6, and 3-8-1, were rated 111, 112 and 113 against the spread among all of the 120 FBS teams. All the schools below these teams had losing records. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that lines for these teams are often factored with the public’s opinion. The University of California (14) starts the season in Hawaii on Thursday. They are a three TD favorite. StatFox experts say they aren’t put off by that huge figure. This translates to 89.2%, or +28.6 units (Rating = 5*). StatFox has also released stats for Saturday’s showdown between Purdue and Notre Dame in South Bend. The hosting Fighting Irish are a double-digit favorite in that one. Notre Dame beat the Boilermakers 24-21 last season, but it should be noted that Purdue covered the 6-point spread. Of Purdue, StatFox says, Play Against a home team (NOTRE DAME) on the first month of the season, when they have ended last season with 4 or losses or more in their last 5 games. They have 5 offensive starters returning and they were 30-8 over the last 10 seasons. This means 78.9%, or +21.2 units (Rating = 3*).

Florida State (20) will host FCS opponent Stamford as the Seminoles begin the season.

The defending National Champion, Alabama will host San Jose State in what could easily be called a “paycheck” matchup. The Crimson Tide was 14-0 straight up last year, were 9-4 against the spread. The Spartans were 2-10 straight and against the spread. San Jose’s record against the spread was the poorest among all FBS teams.

Today we like two games on the schedule and hope to fatten up the YouWager.com account to get ready for some football. Our first game is in Minnesota yet again, and you guessed it, we like the Motor City Kitties once again today. I must admit, the schedule is pretty thin in the majors today, so treading cautiously on the two plays is advisable. My trusty system liked the Tigers at a small number, but that’s good enough for me. After years and years of success, I trust it daily. On the nose of the Huskies. Iowa State having home field advantage won’t be enough to cover the 5 points, going by my trusty system. Should be a nice game though, as all of the action looks nice tonight, for the simple fact that meaningful football returns and excitement is running high!

Just a couple quick thoughts on Ben Roethlisberger. Ok…I am done. I have no thoughts at all on Big Ben. Word is he is going to ask Roger Goodell to reduce his suspension from 6 games to 3. Not going to happen. Goodell and the NFL offices said many times already that 4 games was a “possibility”. Just take it and run, Ben. Heck, treat it like the dude in Minnesota who I promised I wouldn’t mention again. Take as much time as possible off, and come back only when it matters. If you are worried about where you will be after sitting that long, stay out of the nightclubs and find a girl at least close to your age. Oops, sorry…I couldn’t resist.
