College Basketball Game Preview at YouWager: Hoyas vs. Bearcats

Georgetown Hoyas vs. Cincinnati Bearcats

Tip-off: Friday, February 15, 2013 – 9:00 PM ET

Fifth Third Arena, Cincinnati, OH

The Georgetown Hoyas are enjoying their longest Big East victory streak in two college basketball seasons, however it’s been longer than that since the have beaten the Cincinnati Bearcats.

The No. 15 Georgetown team has dropped four straight in this series as they travel to face Cincinnati tonight in what figures to be a low-scoring affair.

The Hoyas (18-4, 8-3) have tied No. 6 Syracuse Orange and No. 18 Marquette Golden Eagles for first place in the crowded Big East by winning six in a row. Georgetown is limiting rivals to 35.9 percent from the field during this run — their longest in conference play over the past five seasons other than an eight-game win streak in 2010-11.

According to the YouWager NCAA live lines, it’s been three seasons since the Hoyas have beaten the Bearcats (19-6, 7-5), and this is the only scheduled meeting this season after Georgetown lost two matchups in each of the last two.

In 2012 Cincinnati won 68-64 away from home before winning 72-70 in double overtime in the Big East tournament quarterfinals.

A hard-nosed defensive battle is possible. The Hoyas are second in the conference in scoring defense (55.7 points per game) and field-goal percentage defense (37.8) while the Bearcats are third in those categories at 58.4 and 38.0.

Cincinnati is the Big East’s top rebounding team at 41.1 per game with a plus-7.5 margin that preoccupies coach John Thompson, whose team has a rebound margin of plus-1.9.

Georgetown will also need to worry about Cashmere Wright, who is one steal shy of breaking David Kennedy’s school record of 189 that has stood for 32 years. Wright has been suffered several knee injuries throughout his career and is currently battling a shoulder issue.

The Hoyas star Otto Porter totaled 20 points and eight rebounds in several games. Porter is averaging 18.6 points and 8.9 rebounds over the last nine games, compared to 12.8 and 7.1 through the first 12.
