NFL NEWS AT YOUWAGER: THE SUPER BOWL HANGOVER

There are many different types of hangovers. Then there is the infamous Super Bowl Hangover. It’s a dreaded curse of a hangover. It’s also referred to as the Super Bowl Curse. We asked YouWager’s resident historian to refresh our memory. Is it too early to start wagering on next year’s top NFL contenders? According to YouWager’s expert, the classic Super Bowl Curse, or Super Bowl Hangover, like Dante’s vision of hell, and a good hamburger, has at least three levels:

  1. Participants follow up their Super Bowl appearance with a less than stellar year the next season.
  2. The World Championship team cannot repeat its success.
  3. Hosting teams of the Super Bowl city never get to play on their home turf.

The Super Bowl Hangover has been offered as an explanation as to why losing teams often experience below-average wins in the following season. Or why Super Bowl Champs rarely return the next year. Former NFL manager Charley Casserly offered one explanation: Opponents treat the NFL Championship-winning team differently.“You become the biggest game on everybody’s schedule,” he told YouWager’s news source.

These ideas must exist for a reason, we decided, so we thought YouWager’s NFL football betting fans might appreciate a look at the numbers for the basic levels for the Hangover, or Curse.

The Winners Curse

The first 5 Super Bowl champs of the new millennium had above average winning percentages during the year after their Super Bowl appearance. The losers of the same games had below average winning percentages in the following year. The curse is often said to apply to winners of the game as well.  Since 1993, very few Super Bowl-winning teams have managed to follow up their victories with a second Super Bowl appearance or even make it to a conference title match in the next NFL football wagering season. In what sportsbook bettors call the Super Bowl era, only two teams have lost the Super Bowl, then won it the following season.

The Non-Repeat Curse

This part of the Hangover has been the talk of the online betting community, when projecting odds against Super Bowl Champions, since 2005. The New England Patriots of 2004, and just 6 other teams have made back-to-back trips to the Super Bowl.

The Home Field Curse

This one only affects the team in the hosting city of the next Super Bowl. No NFL team has ever played the Super Bowl in their own home stadium, before the home crowd. San Francisco 49ers got to play in Super Bowl XIX in Stanford Stadium, instead of Candlestick Park. The LA Rams played Super Bowl XIV in the Rose Bowl. The last Super Bowl hosting team to make it to the playoffs was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of 2000. Since then, the hosting teams of the next 12 Super Bowls did not make it to the playoffs.

With sanctions in place, when the New Orleans Saints faced the 2012 NFL football wagering season, as the hosting team for Super Bowl XLVII, after the infamous Bounty Scandal, and the penalties that it ultimately cost the team, like the absence of their head coach, many commentators in the media declared that the Home Field Curse was clearly in effect.

From 1966-2011, not counting the 6 Super Bowls that were held in a stadium that did not have an NFL team, the Super Bowl hosting team had a record of 249-364-2. In this span of 40 years, the hosting NFL teams have only had 11 winning seasons, 4 split seasons, and 25 losing seasons.

YouWager’s hardcore NFL football bettors will know that, yes, there have been quite a few exceptions since the Super Bowl Hangover concept began in 1977.

But the curse theory might explain why the lights went out in the Superdome.
