According to the current NCAA football ranking, after a day of upsets, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are No. 1 in the land and the SEC has regained its superiority near the top of the BCS standings.
The Irish ranked No. 1 in both polls and by the computer ratings and now need only to beat slumping rival Southern California Trojans on Saturday in Los Angeles to earn its first trip to the BCS title game.
On Saturday, old No. 1 Kansas State lost versus the Baylor Bears 52-24, and No. 2 Oregon Ducks fell in overtime to Stanford Cardinal, 17-14.
No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide filled the vacuum and regained its spot in the national championship, with SEC compatriots Georgia Bulldogs at No. 3 and Florida Gators No. 4.
The Ducks fell to No. 5 after its first loss of the season, and the Wildcats paid the price for getting blown out, dropping five spots to No. 6.
The Gators are ranked second in five of the six computers even when being fifth in the Harris poll and sixth in the USA Today poll. Oregon’s computer average is seventh, and the Wildcats are fourth.
No. 7 LSU Tigers are the highest ranked two-loss team.
The Cardinals jumped five spots to No. 8 after upsetting Oregon. No. 9 Texas A&M is the fifth SEC team in the top 10.
The Florida State Seminoles (10-1) are still at No. 10 while ACC rival Clemson Tigers moved up to No. 11.
